Adding to our flock of Girls

Well we did it! We added 3 more chicks to our flock. This will give us 8 and increase our egg production about 50% by August. We purchased 1 Gold Sexlink (one week old) and 2 Black Australorps (one day old). I’m excited to have baby chicks around again. We have named 2 of them, the Gold Sexlink is Lucy and 1 of the Australorps is named Whitney (in honor of Whitney Houston). I will keep you posted on our exciting adventure with the new babies as they grow!

Laundry Soap

Kellie's "Homemade" Laundry Soap

Because of my daughters skin issues we have had to make some environmental changes in our home. One of those changes was our laundry soap. I have been asked for my recipe so here it is:

Kellie’s ”Homemade” Laundry Soap Recipe:
6 cups Borax
6 cups Super Washing Soda (do not use baking soda)
1 Fels Naptha Heavy Duty Laundry Soap Bar
2-3 bars Ivory
I use a cheese grater to grate up the Ivory and the bar of Fels Naptha. Mix everything together. This will fill a plastic gallon ice cream tub. I measure out 2 heaping tbsp per load. I also use vinegar for my fabric softener.

Remember, this is what works for our family. Make any adjustments for your family as needed!

Chicken Marinade

This past year I got in a funk about meals because of needing to eat healthier. My chicken meals were the worst and we eat alot of chicken. I had to quit buying marinades for chicken due to the sodium content (just check out the label). So I finally decided to make my own marinades (testing them on my family). Here is a recipe that everyone seems to like:
1/4 c. vinegar
3 tsp. dijon mustard
4 cloves garlic
1 lime juiced
1 lemon juiced
* Did you know that you can freeze Lemons and Limes whole for juicing purposes only. So when there on sale buy several to have on hand for recipes.
1/2 c. brown sugar
1  tsp Kosher salt
6 tbsp Olive Oil
1/4 tsp pepper
*adjust whatever to your families tastes

I pound out 8 chicken breast slightly, throw them into a Gallon ziplock bag and marinate for 2 hours to overnight. The longer you marinate the better the chicken. When done marinating just grill. This is kinda a sweet marinade so I would serve this with either a salad or green beans.

I will post more marinades as I make them up and test them on my family!

Part 2- Peace in the Home

Likewise, teach the older woman to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanders or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger woman to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.  Titus 2:3-5

After a lot of response to my Peace in the Home blog, I decided to blog another part to it. It was requested that I add some things that I do or have done to make sure when my husband comes home from work that he comes home to a peaceful enviroment.

*I never bombard Tracy (my husband) with issues when he first gets home. I usually like to see how is day went first.
*Junk mail does he really need to be bothered with this. Just go thru it and throw it away.
*When my kids were younger I always felt the need to make sure they were in a low-key enviroment when Dad walked in the door. So I would turn on PBS at 4:30 for Homework Hotline (my kids loved this show). They would watch it until dinner, which was always ready around 5:15-5:30.
*I always tried to make sure dinner is either cooking, ready or there is a plan by the time Tracy would get home.
*Spend time together at the dinner table. Make this a routine!
*My kids have chores. They help to make sure the house is tidied up before Dad gets home.
*This is a huge pet peeve of mine, never leave laundry folded all over the house, especially in the living room and dining room. I always wanted Tracy to be able to come home and either sit at the dining room table or on the living room couch and talk with his kids without being buried in clutter. How distracting is that? Now about laundry, I often will have folded laundry to be put away on my bed, LOL.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Isaiah 40:29

These are just a few things that I have done over the years to help have peace in my home. As Mom you are you creating an atmosphere that is calm, secure and inviting? By God’s perfect design it is your primary domain of influence. I personally find fulfillment as a mother, only in the biblical pattern of motherhood.  I personally know that God has called me to serve my husband. Marriage means serving one another. Peace won’t happen overnight, you and your kids will have bad days and things will be off at times. Pray, trust the leading of the Holy Spirit and be consistent. With a little work you can bring peace to your home.

Spreadable Butter

Spreadable Butter

2 cups butter(softened) to 2 cups extra light olive oil. The extra virgin olive oil was way too heavy a taste for us.
Mix really well with a mixer until smooth.
This is so much healthier than margarine! (just check out the spreadable butter label bought from the store!)

Enjoy!

Peace in your Home

I have several friends who have shared with me they have no peace in there homes. Here are some thoughts that God has laid on my heart to share.

It is difficult to have peace when you live in a mess. 1 Timothy 5:14 tells us that the young women are to “guide the house”. This phrase is translated from the Greek word, oikodespoteo, coming from two words: oikos-home,and despotace-master. God has given you the responsibility to manage your home-to keep it in order and running smoothly. If you want peace in your home, do things that will bring it!

Have a blessed day friends!

Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Today I’m making 4 pans of Cinnamon rolls ( 1 to eat now and 3 to freeze). These are not considered healthy but compare the ingredients in these to store bought and these are better for you!

Here is my recipe:

2 tbs Yeast
1 3/4 c. Warm Water (105-115 degrees)
1/2 c Sugar
1 Egg
1/4 c. oil ( I use extra light Olive oil, don’t use the regular or it will give your rolls a funny taste, trust me!)
5-5  1/2 c. Flour

* Dissolve Yeast in Warm Water. Add all ingredients. Dough will clean sides of bowl when ready. (Knead until nice and smooth) Let raise until doubled.

Take 1/2 the dough, roll out in lg. rectangle. Spread w/ melted butter then sprinkle with a cinnamon/sugar mixture. Roll up and cut about 1-1 1/2 inch thick. You can cut smaller but we like a larger roll. Let raise 15-20 in a warm place. Bake at 350 for 15-20 min. or until golden brown.

Frosting

1 stick butter (softened)
1 tsp. vanilla
milk (use amount to desired consistency)
Powdered Sugar 2-3 cups

These are aprox amounts.

With this recipe I usually can get 2 9×13 pans. These freeze really well. If you decide to freeze these, bake them first then wrap them really well before you put up in the freezer.

Canning day!

The Famous Kellie Jelly!

So I new last night before I went to bed that we were gonna get snowed in today so I decided to get some canning done. We didn’t get snowed in but I have chosen to make this a snowed in day! It is now 12:30 and I have 11 1/2 pints of Cranberry/Strawberry jam done and 8 pints of pizza sauce done. I am having so much fun today, I’m looking to see what else I can can before I have to put the caner and jars back in the attic. My house smells soooooooooo good! I love days like this! Have a great Friday everyone!

And it begins!

Hey there everyone! Welcome to “Homegrown and Happiness”. The reason I have started this blog is because I have been bombarded with questions from people about all the frugal, healthy things I do. After much prayer and advice from close friends, my husband has worked to get this up and going for me. God gave me a scripture for this new adventure in my life, Titus 2:3-5. I thank God everyday for his strength, guidance and wisdom as I grow in him. I want to encourage anyone to be a good steward about what God has given us. So if you have any questions about chickens, gardening, healthy eating, homeschooling, canning, etc. just send me a message. I look forward to our adventures together!     Kell
